The more interested you are in selling on Amazon, the more questions arise, right? One of the questions may be related to the Amazon Honeymoon period. What is this period, why is it called that way, and how should one behave during it?
What is the Amazon Honeymoon period exactly?
Within the general Amazon FBA sellers’ agreement, the four-week period following the product launch is called the Honeymoon period. Currently, new Amazon listings are ranked higher in the search system than older ones, ranked based on keywords.
This period, surrounded by myths, is called the Honeymoon period only in the general Amazon sellers’ agreement because it is not an officially created and confirmed period by Amazon. It is a side effect – the ranking of new listings in the search system, resulting from the functioning of the Amazon algorithm.
No one outside of Amazon knows how the algorithm works, but after long observation and analysis, patterns noticed by specialists allow for the conclusion that such a four-week period does indeed exist.
How does the Amazon algorithm work during the Honeymoon period?
To better understand the Amazon Honeymoon period, it is necessary to clarify the principles of how the Amazon search algorithm operates.
How the algorithm ranks Amazon listings depends on key factors: the content of listings, including title, 5 key feature descriptions, images, product description, Amazon A+ content; buyer ratings and reviews; the quality and competitiveness of keywords; and, ultimately, to a large extent, the conversion history of each used keyword or phrase.
Newly created listings lack a conversion history for keywords, so the Amazon algorithm bypasses this factor. This means that new product cards are essentially ranked based solely on content and utilized keywords.
What mistake do Amazon sellers often repeat?
Such simplified ranking of new products on Amazon gives sellers the opportunity to significantly improve product visibility and receive more customer reviews: all they need to do is create high-quality Amazon content and rank the product for targeted and high-quality keywords.
Here we encounter the common seller mindset of launching products slowly on Amazon. That is, very often Amazon sellers are not willing to invest much in product description, photoshoot, and image creation only when launching the product for sale. Many want to test, see if the product has potential, and then decide whether to continue selling or stop. Essentially, considering all Amazon fees and other product launch costs, this decision is understandable, but by doing so, sellers miss out on the opportunities of the Amazon Honeymoon period.
As we have found out, the four weeks from product launch, i.e., when the product reaches the Amazon FBA fulfillment center, are the most significant, and this significance is built on the quality of content. Therefore, we highly recommend starting on Amazon with a different approach.
We recommend conducting Amazon keyword analysis and using targeted and high-quality keywords, optimizing the product card title with them, creating the 5 most important product feature (Bullet Points) description according to all requirements, preparing high-quality product photos and images*, and only then sending the product to the Amazon FBA fulfillment center. Such preparation will allow your listing to take advantage of the benefits of the Amazon Honeymoon period from the very beginning.
Is it possible to repeat the Amazon Honeymoon period?
If they miss or not properly utilize the four-week period, sellers often want to have a second Honeymoon. Is this possible?
In life, the second honeymoon is enjoyed either after the first marriage or when “rekindling” the marriage. Similarly, on Amazon, you either have to relaunch the product, i.e., delete the old listing, create a new ASIN, and start from scratch, or make drastic changes in the Amazon listing: completely change the content, images, keywords, and thus force Amazon to re-rank your listing.
Both methods have drawbacks: in the first case, you lose all the accumulated history, including customer reviews, and in the second case, you have to invest significantly in creating new content, and you also lose the accumulated keyword ranking.
